"One Thousand Levels Down"

Author: Alexander Freed Time: 0 ABY, after the destruction of Alderaan Place: Coruscant Anandra Milon is your typical teenage girl. Except she's on the run from Stormtroopers who are trying to arrest her for being a first-generation Alderaanian on the multi-level city-planet of Coruscant. You see, after Darth Vader blew up the planet Alderaan, some people got a little mad. The Alderaanians living on level 3204 began to protest the unjust destruction of Alderaan. The Empire decided to round them up. Anandra and her younger brother Santigo were able to escape their house by hiding in a cleaning droid. They were supposed to seek refuge with a friend of the family that lived on another floor, but they didn't want to help. Anandra and Santigo were forced to continue moving down the levels of Coruscant, one by one,  until they could find a safe place. They eventually find a drug dealer in a cantina who will provide them safety, but only if Anandra works for him. She ref

Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir #1-4

Author:  Jeremy Barlow Time: 19 BBY, during the Clone Wars, after "The Lawless" ( The   Clone Wars Season 5 Episode 15) Place: Stygeon, Zanbar, Ord Mantell, Dathomir This comic book is in a weird place. It's considered Canon, but only due to technical reasons. It is not a Marvel publication, and all the other Dark Horse Comics publications are considered part of Star Wars  Legends. So how did this book slip into the new canon? Because it is an adaptation of an unproduced script of the Clone Wars  television show, and that show is Canon. The serial nature of The Clone Wars  really lends itself to comic book adaptations. The show is mostly made up of story arcs that take place over a few episodes at a time, just like comic story arcs would. I can see this four-issue comic book as four separate television episodes. In the show, Darth Maul was resurrected and formed a criminal syndicate called the Shadow Collective. Darth Sidious realized that Maul could be a p

"Blade Squadron"

Author: David J. Williams, Mark S. Williams Time: 4 ABY, during the Battle of Endor Place: Endor "Blade Squadron" is a two-part short story, and it holds the distinction of being the very first new entry in the Star Wars   Canon. Gina Moonsong is an ex-smuggler from Coruscant who joined the Rebel Alliance as a B-wing pilot. She has a red buzzcut, which means she's also a rebel, lowercase r. She doesn't always agree with her superior, Lieutenant Braylen Stramm. (But she'll fall in love with him, anyway...) Stramm is an Imperial deserter who got tired of fighting the good guys. Look at me, I'm a rebel! The Wing Commander of Blade Squadron is Adon Fox, who lost his wife during the evacuation of Hoth. His Imperial counterpart, Admiral  Jhared Monferrat, is commanding the Devastator (which used to be Darth Vader's flagship). He's a cruel man (duh) who jettisons potential smugglers and calmly shoots an officer for questioning his judgment.

I've always been a fan of the Star Wars Expanded Universe. I don't know what drew me to the EU. Maybe I loved Star Wars   so much that I felt a need to consume everything I could find related to the franchise. Or maybe I just loved cheesy science fiction books--trust me, there was a lot of bad fanfiction in the EU and I adored every single thing I read, no matter how awful it was. Remember when the three-eyed (imposter) son of Emperor Palpatine fell in love with Princess Leia, so the Jedi Prince named Ken  had to replace Leia with the Leia II droid before the wedding? But now I'm an adult. I realize that some things should really be left in the past, and that includes the old Star Wars  canon.  In 2014, LucasFilm announced that the entire Expanded Universe canon would be rebranded Star Wars  Legends . The only things moving into the "new" official  Star Wars  Canon  would be the six original films and the Clone Wars movie and TV series. From that po
